The Central Arts Council has a very active Historical Preservation Committee and is always interested in discovering more of the rich heritage of Mountain Grove and the surrounding areas. The Historical Preservation Committee, with the words of William J. Bennett in mind, wishes to "give thanks and to remind [our] fellow citizens of their obligation of gratitude to those who made it possible for us to lead free and happy lives." To Samuel Hardin, who established the first settlement at Hickory Springs, to those who persevered through the Civil War, and to those who followed, much is due our founding fathers. "... Obscurity and oblivion are not what they deserve."1
